Garda Raids On Bank Shows Nobody Is Above The Law

Wexford Fianna Fail TD Sean Connick has welcomed yesterday’s raid by the Garda Fraud Squad on the Headquarters of Anglo Irish Bank saying it proves no-one is above the law.

“Over the past few weeks we have been presented with a constant line of examples of reckless activities within the banking sector.  Certain senior executives in Irish banking seemed to carry on as if they were in some way above the standards we would expect from any other form of business.  Their reckless form of business practice placed the entire Irish economy in jeopardy and they seemed to be motivated by profit to such an extent that they didn’t care what impact it would have on the country.   

I am very happy that the Director of Corporate Enforcement and the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation have taken the step of obtaining search warrants and carrying out searches on the headquarters of Anglo Irish Bank.  This will send out a very clear signal that nobody, irrespective of the position they hold, is above the law.  It is very important that members of the public and international investors regain their confidence in the Irish banking sector.  Today’s raids by the Fraud Squad show that the government will not tolerate the sort of irresponsible corporate practice in the banking sector which has been revealed recently and I hope that this move will help to rebuild confidence in our banks and in our economy.  I have no doubt that any evidence of illegal practices which may be uncovered as a result of today’s searches will be treated very seriously and that those who are found to be responsible will be held to account for their actions.”
